Two Lightings Fly in Concert

Ice locked in a glacier on Greenland, a 1992 expedition found almost fifty years later to the day a P-38F that attempted a wheels up landing on the ice. Today we know this P-38 as “Glacier Girl.” It was part of a flight of 6 P-38Fs and 3 B-17Es on their way to Europe. Weather and then lack of fuel brought the Lightning down on the ice. It was imagination and passion that brought it up so that today we can watch this piece of history fly. There are a handful of P-38s flying in the world today but “Glacier Girl” is the best known. This air to air with two P-38s, “Glacier Girl” and “Ruff Stuff” occurred in 18 Sept., 2010 over Pyramid Lake, NV. It was hard to place this gorgeous aircraft flying behind us under ice a decade ago. “Glacier Girl” is now owned by Rod Lewis and it will be making many appearances in 2012. It travels with a great display telling its amazing story. While it’s a cool read, what’s even better is seeing it in the skies where it belongs.
